Yamaha Silent Brass for Trombone or Bass Trombone
The Ultimate Trombone Practice Mute
The Silent Brass System (SBS) consists of five components: a special mute, a cable, a control unit, an AC power adaptor, and headphones. The control unit, called the "Personal Studio," is about the size of an external hard drive. There is also a belt clip so that the user can use the SBS while practicing marching or choreographed horn section dance moves!
The mute looks much like a conventional straight mute for trombone. All air passes through the mute by way of a set of baffles which almost completely muffles the sound which is great for family members in the same or next room. The mute is also designed to minimize the resistance when playing the trombone so it feels authentic to the player. The player hears themselves immediately playing through headphones which they wear.
What comes through the headphones sounds close to an acoustic trombone. Further, the Personal Studio allows the user to adjust the character of the sound. A master volume control handles the total volume going to the headphones while a reverb control and a three position mode switch tailors the sound to produce the effect of different acoustic environments e.g. a cathedral.
The Silent Brass System has additional inputs and outputs. There are two separate jacks which allow two mutes to be connected to one Personal Studio at the same time, and two separate headphone jacks. This allows two players to use a single Personal Studio to play together, as for example a student and a teacher, or two people practicing a duet.
There is another jack for AUX input, as from a CD player, a tape deck, or other external source. It has a separate input volume control as well, so the amount of sound coming in from the external source can be mixed to the user's taste. This helps the player "jam along" with a backing track such as a Jamie Abersoul CD.
The SBS also has a Line Out output jack. This will take what is coming out of the Personal Studio and send it to anything: computer, tablet, tuning meter, sound system, etc. This allows you to record your session and play it back and hear it later.
